Description:

ABOUT THE HER HELMET THURSDAYS PROJECT:
Businesses and organizations participating in HER Helmet Thursdays help HER / Mother Earth by providing discounts on Thursdays for people who bike. A long-term project with no scheduled end-date, HER Helmet Thursdays was launched in 2009 in Monterey County, California as a public service. NOTE: When participating businesses and organizations sign up, they are provided a staff reference sheet. Many have frequent staff changes. Just in case a staff person on duty isn't familiar with this long-term project, it may be helpful to have the listing for that location pulled up on your mobile phone screen (or print a copy of their listing to take along), so you're prepared to kindly show their listing.
Before claiming discount, refer to FAQs and project details, including date restrictions, in "LISTINGS, Map, How to Get the Discounts, and FAQs about HER Helmet Thursdays" at http://www.bikemonterey.org.

ABOUT THIS PARTICIPANT:
Right in the heart of Old Monterey, on Alvarado Street, is Britannia Arms. The Brit has windows that open wide onto this popular street, making it a fun place to watch passersby as you enjoy the fresh air of our seaside community.

Inside you'll find a pub that is usually calm and peaceful for daytime dining, then often transforms into a happening music club at night. Tables of DLI, MIIS, and other students challenging one another to chess or other games is not an uncommon sight; the Brit is a welcoming, popular hangout.

There are bike racks nearby (small black iron ones, low to the ground--don't overlook them).

Bike Tips:

Short ride from the Monterey Bay coastal trail.

Britannia Arms (known to locals as "The Brit") is located straight up Alvarado Street from the Custom House plaza/Fisherman's Wharf; however note the following bike tip! At Del Monte Avenue (in front of the Portola Hotel & Spa), cyclists are directed to use Calle Principal, since Alvarado is a one-way street. No worries, it's a wider street anyway. Bike up Calle Principal until you see Comerica Bank on your left. Get off your bike here and walk through the little Bonifacio Plaza; you'll quickly reach Alvarado Street (Britannia Arms will be on your right).
