Description:

ABOUT THE HER HELMET THURSDAYS PROJECT:
Businesses and organizations participating in HER Helmet Thursdays help HER / Mother Earth by providing discounts on Thursdays for people who bike. A long-term project with no scheduled end-date, HER Helmet Thursdays was launched in 2009 in Monterey County, California as a public service. NOTE: When participating businesses and organizations sign up, they are provided a staff reference sheet. Many have frequent staff changes. Just in case a staff person on duty isn't familiar with this long-term project, it may be helpful to have the listing for that location pulled up on your mobile phone screen (or print a copy of their listing to take along), so you're prepared to kindly show their listing.
Before claiming discount, refer to FAQs and project details, including date restrictions, in "LISTINGS, Map, How to Get the Discounts, and FAQs about HER Helmet Thursdays" at http://www.bikemonterey.org.

ABOUT THIS PARTICIPANT:
Yummy, healthy breakfast and lunch, not to mention pastries galore! Elena--formerly a pastry chef for 14 yrs at Big Sur's famous Ventana Inn--and her crew can often be found at the local farmers markets too, which tempts many new customers to head over to her cozy Sand City gathering place.

Gallettes, quiches, grilled sandwiches and wraps, soups, salads, and more. Pastries include pies and tarts, very special cookies and other treats.

Indoor and outdoor tables, casual spot. Tucked away in the heart of Sand City--and close to the hearts of many Monterey Peninsula residents, along with those lucky visitors who discover it.

Bike Tips:

It's easy to reach Sweet Elena's via bike. Elena's is not far from a Class I section of the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail.

From Robert's Lake at Canyon Del Rey and Del Monte Avenue (you'll see Embassy Suites at that intersection), bike up Del Monte (heading into Seaside) in the direction of Starbucks. If biking with children, you may want to consider the sidewalk for this stretch. (The Bicycling Monterey website has sidewalk riding ordinances and related tips. Check Bicycling Monterey for any updates to these sidewalk instructions: bike cautiously and at a reasonable speed; yield to all pedestrian traffic; give an audible signal before overtaking and passing pedestrian. Details: http://marilynch.com/blog/bicycling-on-sidewalks-misconceptions-and-advisories.html )

When you reach Contra Costa, make a left and you're in the little town of Sand City. You'll immediately see Olympia Avenue off to your left --that's Elena's street, which is one-way here, so bike the short distance around the little block to reach her.
