Businesses and organizations participating in HER Helmet Thursdays help HER / Mother Earth by providing discounts on Thursdays for people who bike. A long-term project with no scheduled end-date, HER Helmet Thursdays was launched in 2009 in Monterey County, California as a public service. NOTE: When participating businesses and organizations sign up, they are provided a staff reference sheet. Many have frequent staff changes. Just in case a staff person on duty isn't familiar with this long-term project, it may be helpful to have the listing for that location pulled up on your mobile phone screen (or print a copy of their listing to take along), so you're prepared to kindly show their listing.
Before claiming discount, refer to FAQs and project details, including date restrictions, in "LISTINGS, Map, How to Get the Discounts, and FAQs about HER Helmet Thursdays" at

The River Inn, here for more than a century, is a popular landmark for many reasons. Generations of locals and visitors love this place, including the regularly scheduled live music on their back deck. This full service restaurant with an emphasis on locally grown food serves breakfast, lunch, dinner; check their website, or phone them, for any updates about their hours of service.

Big Sur River Inn's restaurant has been a HER Helmet Thursdays participant since March 6, 2010.

Bike Tips:

Bicycling Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast isn't right for everyone. See tips for bicycling Big Sur:

HER Helmet Thursdays discounts apply even if you don't bike all the way—to any participating spot, and of course, that's true for people biking to Big Sur River Inn restaurant as well. It's fine to bike-and-ride (e.g., take your bicycle aboard a Monterey-Salinas Transit bus, or on a personal motor vehicle rack), and just bike partway there. "Any mile of biking beats a mile of driving!" See bike-and-ride tips:

If you're camping or otherwise lodging in majestic Big Sur, having your bicycle along means you can take little side trips without adding to motor vehicle congestion.

Coming from the Monterey Peninsula, the Big Sur River Inn restaurant will be about 22 miles south of the bike path parallel to Highway 1 that runs behind the Barnyard at the mouth of Carmel Valley.
