Businesses and organizations participating in HER Helmet Thursdays help HER / Mother Earth by providing discounts on Thursdays for people who bike. A long-term project with no scheduled end-date, HER Helmet Thursdays was launched in 2009 in Monterey County, California as a public service. NOTE: When participating businesses and organizations sign up, they are provided a staff reference sheet. Many have frequent staff changes. Just in case a staff person on duty isn't familiar with this long-term project, it may be helpful to have the listing for that location pulled up on your mobile phone screen (or print a copy of their listing to take along), so you're prepared to kindly show their listing.
Before claiming discount, refer to FAQs and project details, including date restrictions, in "LISTINGS, Map, How to Get the Discounts, and FAQs about HER Helmet Thursdays" at

El Zacatecano has been serving Salinas Valley and Monterey County since 1973. We specialize in delicious Mexican homemade entrees along with some tasty favorites. The taste of our food sets us apart from any other eatery. Great taste should never come at great cost. We provide our customers with exceptional service, quality food, and a friendly environment all at a great value.

Come see for yourself why this is considered one of the Alisal's best restaurants.

Usual hours are as follows, but you may wish to phone ahead to be sure hours haven't changed: open daily at 8 a.m.; close at 9 p.m. except close at 10 p.m. on Fri and Sat.

Bike Tips:

Bike rack directly out front. Couldn't be handier! Are you a touring cyclist with lots of gear on your bike? Picture windows allow keeping an eye on the bike rack.

El Zacatecano Restaurant is on the north side of East Alisal Street. Coming from Oldtown Salinas/downtown, it's a straight, flat trip down Alisal Street to reach El Zacatecano, which will be on your left.(There's only one brief, slight hill between downtown and El Zacatecano, and it's so brief that your velocity on the downhill portion will push you uphill. Cinchy!)

Make use of the Alisal bike lanes, or if biking with children or otherwise using sidewalks: exercise extra caution at driveways and intersections, and observe local sidewalk ordinance and etiquette.

See tips for sidewalk riding, including Salinas ordinance on the Bicycling Monterey website. Check Bicycling Monterey for any updates to these sidewalk instructions: bike cautiously and at a reasonable speed; yield to all pedestrian traffic; give an audible signal before overtaking and passing pedestrian.
